Beth Alden is the winner of the 2005 Milli Award

Beth Alden, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is a couture hat designer for all the right reasons. When asked she will tell you that a good hat suggests a mystery, sparks curiosity, that it enhances femininity, that it is a means of self expression. She will tell you how much she loves theater and that wearing a hat can give you the feeling that you are wearing a costume and that you can be anyone you want to be.

Inspired by the elegant and sophisticated eras and by fine detailing and craftsmanship, Beth considers herself a sculptor of textures and shapes. She loves the tactile mixing of textural materials, taking antique fabrics and making them into new and intricate pieces which need to be held and examined to be appreciated. But a good hat has to be practical as well. Being a mom and a modern woman Beth understands that a design that perfectly fits the head and is comfortable and durable as well as lovely to wear, is a hat that will stand the test of time.

Beth enjoys the play that happens when working with a private client. She loves to watch the transformation which takes place on the face of the client when she sees herself in the right hat. Rain and Shine Hats are all weather hats. They are water resistant and adjust to accommodate different head sizes and to fit snugly so as not slide or ride up. Fine detailing, intricately hand sewn flowers, antique trim elements like belt buttons and tabs make each hat unique. Each hat is lined and individually signed.

The Haute Couture group is made up of velvet hats and headpieces constructed of the finest antique materials. The hats are comfortable, adjustable and reversible. Each hat comes with it's own velvet pouch. The headpieces can be worn alone or over any velvet hat, they are unusually detailed with feathers from antique pieces and unique flowers and jeweled trim elements.
